Algae

Algae is a broad term for many different types of microorganisms, typically chlorophyll-containing eukaryotes or cyanobacteria similar to plants. The most common types of algae found in swimming pools are Green Algae, Mustard Algae, Black Algae, and Red Algae. While mostly harmless in and of themselves, algal blooms in swimming pools can create an environment suitable for the growth of other microorganisms, such as pathogenic bacteria.

What causes algae?

Algae is inevitably introduced to standing bodies of water like swimming pools through vectors such as rainwater, airborne spores, and contaminated objects such as clothing and tree leaves. It grows into an algal bloom due to factors like improper pH balance, poor circulation and filtration, and lack of proper sanitation.
